Illumination and diel variation modify fish passage through an inclined grid

چکیده
Fishing trials were carried out with a demersal trawl fitted an inclined grid in the extension. Fibre optic cables attached to allowing illumination of top and bottom halves independently. Fish that passed through half entered one codend whereas those lower another. Four lighting configurations investigated where (i) none was illuminated; (ii) bottom-half (iii) top-half (iv) all illuminated. Trials held at night during day. We demonstrate proportion fish depends on has diel variation. Most species less likely enter upper when illuminated results similar regardless whether bottom-half, top-half, or whole There also effect for haddock whiting greater flatfish than The are more subtle some cod, illuminating had no day, common dab, there but For long rough greatest effect.

Environmental diel variation, parasite loads, and local population structuring of a mixed-mating mangrove fish
Genetic variation within populations depends on population size, spatial structuring, and environmental variation, but is also influenced by mating system. Mangroves are some of the most productive and threatened ecosystems on earth and harbor a large proportion of species with mixed-mating (self-fertilization and outcrossing). Understanding population structuring in mixed-mating species is cri...
متن کاملDiel variation of larval fish abundance in the Amazon and Rio Negro.
Many streams and large rivers present higher ichthyoplankton densities at night. However, in some rivers this does not occur and larvae are equally abundant during the day. Larval drift diel variation is an important information for planning sampling programs for evaluating larval distribution and production. The aim of this study was to test whether the abundance of larval fish was different a...
متن کاملA novel marine bioinvasion vector: Ichthyochory, live passage through fish
Many species of Indo-Pacific holobenthic foraminifera have been introduced and successfully established sustainable populations in the Mediterranean Sea over the past few decades. However, known natural and anthropogenic vectors do not explain how these species were introduced long distances from their origin. We present evidence for a novel marine bioinvasion vector explaining this long-distan...
متن کاملPhosphorus uptake by Microcystis during passage through fish guts
Herbivorous fish feed on cyanobacteria. Digestability differs, however, between cyanobacteria species without mucous cover and mucilaginous genera such as Microcystis. The latter can pass fish guts almost undamaged, and it has been hypothesized that they can take up nutrients during gut passage. Here we tested whether live Microcystis, as food for juvenile roach labeled with 33P, indeed showed ...
متن کاملDiel Variation in Beaked Whale Diving Behavior
We investigate diel variation in beaked whale diving behavior using data from timedepth recorders deployed on six Blainville’s (Mesoplodon densirostris) beaked whales (126 hours day; 129 hours night) and two Cuvier’s (Ziphius cavirostris) beaked whales (19 hours day; 15 hours night). Deep foraging dives (>800 m) occurred at similar rates during the day and night for Blainville’s beaked whales (...
